You know how most of us wait till Christmas to “give back”? Well we don’t have to, we can start right now. Winter is coming and this year, instead of updating our statuses to how cold it is while we’re covered in tons of blankets, I challenge you to join the Twitter Blanket Drive with me.
The Twitter Blanket Drive is a South African initiative that began with just one tweet by Melanie Minnaar in 2010. Her tweet ” What if each person on Twitter donated a blanket” started a movement that has grown in leaps and bounds.
2014 marks the 5th Twitter Blanket Drive. Thousands of blankets have been handed out to charities and people living on the street in the past 5 years … just imagine if each person on Facebook (or reading this blog post ) donated a blanket this year.
If you would like to lend a helping hand you may drop off your blanket(s) at one of the following points in Cape Town before 29 May 2014 (I’ve provided some of their twitter handles):
Cape Town CBD:
@FireAndIceCT (additionally @ProteaHotels) – The Fire and Ice Hotel (200 Bree Street, Cape Town is the main drop-off point)
@CapeTownTourism has availed 4 of its biggest offices. – CTT in Burg Street, CTT in Muizenberg, CTT in Blaauwberg ; CTT in Somerset West
Northern Suburbs, Belville:
@TygerBurger offices in the Bloemhof Building, c/o Bloemhof and Edward Streets, Bellville
Athlone:
@Metamorphasize (alternatively contact @shaqct) in Asar Mini Mall, Belgravia Road
Helderberg, Somerset West: @GrowthSpace on the 2nd Floor, Oudehuis Centre, 122 Main Road, Somerset West
Join me on the 29th of May from 6pm for the official handing over event, which will be held at the Protea Hotel Fire and Ice in Bree Street. Your entrance fee is a blanket (or five). Snacks will be provided and there is a cash bar for your convenience (you’re most welcome to buy me a drink :P).
The charity in Cape Town is Operation Shoebox. They represent 15 charities and thousands of children. No doubt the blankets collected will go to children and adults who truly need them.
