Update on South Africa’s Hair Growth Remedy

Judging from the amazing response the hair growth remedy post received, I was quite happy to discover that I wasn’t the only South African who didn’t know it existed. I’ve been receiving emails, whatsapp messages and even phone calls about it. It was quite a “thing” – then in typical Mandy style *curtsy* I accidentally deleted the post! Needless to say,

panic pursued,  but with a little help from my genius friend (thanks naartjie!) and some researching on my end, we managed to retrieve it from the interweb’s outer limits. You’ll see that the date on the hair growth remedy post is the 16th of October but the original was actually posted on the 7th.
Measurements as of 7 October 2014

Ok so now that that’s out of the way, I need to clear up the spritz issue.  As I have mentioned in my disclaimer, I am no expert on hair care – I simply go about mixing potions and finding remedies that work for my hair type (3c/4a) and my daughter’s (4c).
I’ve heard some stories that the spritz caused itchiness, I went back to the recipe and realised that I should have included water. Water is one of the only true moisturizers we have, so whenever you mix a spritz together, add a bit of water to the mix. This may prevent the itchiness, if not – STOP using the growth remedy. Immediately

The kid suffers from dry scalp so I’ve changed my spritz a little for her benefit – and believe me, it has been beneficial. My recipe now includes:

50ml  bay rum

10ml bergamot essence

1 ampule of placenta

50ml aloe vera juice
2.5ml castor oil
Fill the rest of your bottle with water
Spritz on your hair, concentrating on the roots, 2 to 3 times a week

It’s a well known fact that I am a huge castor oil fan. I mix it into my Tresemme Naturals conditioner for a super soft wash and go. The Aloe vera juice (available at Dischem) is great for conditioning, hair growth, it is an anti-inflammatory and it has antipruritic benefits. This basically means that it is an anti-itch remedy. Castor oil and aloe juice both aid in hair growth as well.
My routine is to spritz, twist, air-dry. I take the twists out  and style the next morning.
I only rinse out on my next wash day. You may choose to rinse out as you see fit. I am not a master at the twist-out game but nonetheless, this is usually the result:

Before I give you my measurements for this month,I need to make it clear that not all hair grows the same. Expecting the same growth as the next person is unrealistic. Simply keep loving your own healthy hair.

So, to answer the question of whether my hair grew, you have to bear in mind that my growth is usually at 1cm per month (place drum roll here):-

Front: 23.5cm
Side: 24.5cm
Top: 24.5cm
Back: 21.5cm

If you’ve used this remedy, you can relate to the growth, shine, strength and all round health of your hair. Have you started the hair growth remedy? What have your experiences been?

Stay Gold,

Mandy

Hello Mandy, I started using placenta after reading your article but I was wary about using bergamot essence in my routine after hearing that it causes photo sensitivity, and with my scalp sometimes being exposed to the sun when plaiting I didn't want to risk it. I wanted to know if your spritz has since changed or if you have maybe any advice regarding photo sensitivity and bergamot essence if you have experience. Also have you used the pH balanced leave in as prescribed by Kimmaytube. I wanted to know because I wanted to find out what your thoughts or your reader's thoughts were on the mix with our locally available products. Thank you.

Hello Serra, thank you so much for your comment. This is what I know – All citrus oils are photosensitive in it's purest form. I use the Lennon's bergamot essence which is a synthetic oil (artificial oil) I personally have not had issues with this product regarding photosensitivity. My hair looks and feels healthier and fuller since I've started the routine.
My go to leave in is Tresemme Naturals conditioner but I would love to try local products. I'll check out the link, thanks for the suggestion 🙂

Hi I just started using the treatment, added all the ingredients as prescribed in a 500ml bottle, but after that I filled the entire 500ml bottle with water…….was that the correct way to go or did I just dilute the whole mixture too much?

  6. 03/16/2015 / 07:30

    Hi Angelique,
Yes that is correct. Fill the rest of the bottle with water 🙂
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Mandy. What Aloe Vera juice did you use? I have that big bottle that I got at dis-chem for around R60, but I think it's concentrate and not juice, it also has some vitamin c added to it. I have been looking for Aloe Vera juice or gel, and that was all I could find apart from that sugary drink with barely any Aloe Vera juice and/or pulp in it.

  10. 10/09/2015 / 01:01

Hello. That is precisely the one that I used. The concentrated one! I use a small amount and fill the bottle with water to dilute it. Use according to your hair. If the recipe is to much for your hair, use less. Good luck

    Hi Mandy

I have been using the mixture for about 2 months now. My hair has grown about 4 – 5 cm at the back. in front about 2cm. and on the sides also about 2cm. My hair has never looked this good. My hair looks so healthy.
I wash my hair every 3 days and spray it on. I have just mixed it together, but I dont add water to the mixture. Really loving it. This is the first time my hair grew so fast in such a short time. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Mandy

i had such healthy hair but due to dying my hair it kinda thinned out so i started twisting my hair but instead my hair broke off and i used to have such tough hair no chemical could do it any harm.

i than came across your site and immediately bought the mixture: Bergamot essence + Kair placenta + Bay rum and olive oil mixed with a bit of water i sprayed last night and this morning my hair looked quite dry so i applied olive oil. I than added some bergamot essence in my shampoo (dove repair and protect) but i see on your previous post i can add placenta as well.

i dont know what to use for my daughter’s hair (6) she has hair like yours but her tips are dried out i’ve cut the dead hair off but still the same please advise on this

Hey Karen. Winter is so tough on our hair. It dries out our curls and skin. I would get my hands on a more nourishing shampoo. I am not familiar with dove hair products, but I am partial to products that don’t contain sulfates that dry out your hair. Unfortunately dyeing your hair also dries it out. The best way to get rid of it is to keep it moisturized and to trim it regularly. I know you don’t want to hear this but cutting off the the chemicals is your best option. Your daughters hair will change gradually. My advice is to deep condition her hair every week and use oils to massage her scalp. Twists are a great alternative for kids. It’s easy to manage and they can keep it in for the a whole week. I hope this helps.
